About this tour

This session views the Acropolis from the streets around it, with an archaeologist explaining what is on the hill and in the museum below. You look down into the Theatre of Dionysus, up at the Propylaia, the Erechtheion and the Parthenon, and hear how the Parthenon has served as temple, church and mosque across its history. Outside the Acropolis Museum, the guide describes the original Caryatids and the gap left by the marbles that remain abroad.

The call opens with a sound check, then circles the hill from the South Slope round towards the museum, with the archaeologist explaining each building as it comes into view. Questions are welcome throughout, and a short list of the buildings and their history follows by message afterwards.

This suits anyone who wants the Acropolis explained properly by someone trained in archaeology rather than a quick summary. It also suits those who have visited before and want the history filled in around what they saw.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Athens before heading out.

  2. The Theatre of Dionysus 21 min

From the street running along the South Slope, the camera looks down into the Theatre of Dionysus, the guide explaining that Sophocles' plays were first staged on this spot.

  3. The Acropolis from below 21 min

Looking up at the Acropolis from below, the guide points out the Propylaia gateway, the Erechtheion's porch and the Parthenon crowning the hill, each outlined against the sky.

  4. The Parthenon's many lives 21 min

Still looking up at the hill, the guide explains how the Parthenon has been a temple, a church, a mosque and even a gunpowder store across its long history.

  5. The Acropolis Museum, from outside 21 min

From outside the Acropolis Museum, the guide describes the original Caryatids and the Parthenon gallery inside, including the gap left by the marbles that are not in Athens.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Athens: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Souvlaki and Plaka, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Athens time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
