About this tour

This session focuses on the Stoa of Attalos and the wider Ancient Agora, the marketplace and civic heart of classical Athens. Kostas explains how the stoa was rebuilt in the twentieth century using the same building methods as the original. He then moves across the open ground of the Agora and out to the well preserved Temple of Hephaestus.

Kostas checks his connection near the stoa before walking its length slowly so the columns come through clearly on camera. He answers questions about the reconstruction and the temple's survival as he moves across the site. A short list of the buildings and their dates follows the call.

This suits anyone with a deeper interest in ancient Athens who wants more detail than a general overview. It also pairs well with a tour of the nearby Acropolis for a fuller picture of the ancient city.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Athens before heading out.

  2. The Stoa of Attalos 17 min

Kostas films the long reconstructed colonnade, pointing out how the rebuilt stoa follows the original ancient design down to the type of stone used.

  3. The Temple of Hephaestus 17 min

From outside the fence, he shows one of the best preserved ancient Greek temples anywhere, explaining why its position away from later building kept it so intact.

  4. The Agora's open ground 17 min

Walking across the open site, he points out the low stone foundations marking where the ancient marketplace's shops and civic buildings once stood.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Athens: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Souvlaki and Plaka, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Athens time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
