About this tour

This evening walk moves from Syntagma Square through Plaka and up into Anafiotika, ending with the Acropolis lit against the night sky. You see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the oldest inhabited lanes in Athens, and a small village of island-style houses built into the rock below the Acropolis. It follows the city from its modern square back to its oldest corners.

The call opens with a sound check at Syntagma, then follows the streets uphill through Plaka and Anafiotika as evening sets in. Questions come along the way, and a short list of the neighbourhoods and their history follows by message once the walk ends.

This suits anyone who wants Athens at a slower pace, away from the Acropolis crowds. It also suits those who have visited during the day and want to see the same streets after dark.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Athens before heading out.

  2. Syntagma and the changing of the guard 21 min

At Syntagma Square, the camera catches the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Evzones' slow, exaggerated steps timed to the hour.

  3. Plaka 21 min

The walk drops into Plaka, the oldest inhabited neighbourhood in Athens, its lanes narrowing as the guide points out houses that have stood since well before the modern city grew up around them.

  4. Anafiotika 21 min

Above Plaka, the camera climbs into Anafiotika, a small village of low white houses built by island workers who kept the style of their own islands under the Acropolis rock.

  5. The Acropolis at nightfall 21 min

The walk passes the Roman Agora and the Tower of the Winds, ending with the Acropolis lit up against the night sky as the guide looks back at the day's walk.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Athens: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Souvlaki and Psiri, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Athens time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
