About this tour

This session is a home cooking class in Koukaki, built around recipes that trace back to a family from Smyrna. You see soutzoukakia shaped and simmered in tomato sauce, filo stretched thin by hand for spanakopita, and rice pudding finished with cinnamon and mastic. Between dishes, the guide tells the story of the refugees of 1922 and what they carried into Greek cooking.

The call opens with a sound check in the kitchen, then follows the dishes in the order they are cooked, with time to ask questions between steps. A short list of the ingredients and quantities is sent afterwards for anyone who wants to try the recipes.

This suits anyone interested in Greek food history as much as the cooking itself. It also suits those who want to follow along and cook the same dishes at home afterwards.

Included

  • Live video session with a local guide
  • A close look at the dishes and where locals buy them
  • A short list of places and dishes to try later

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Athens before heading out.

  2. A Koukaki kitchen 21 min

In a kitchen in Koukaki, the camera holds on the stovetop as the guide starts the class, explaining that every recipe traces back to a family from Smyrna.

  3. Soutzoukakia 21 min

The guide shapes soutzoukakia, cumin-spiced meatballs, before they go into a simmering tomato sauce, explaining why cumin turns up so often in this style of cooking.

  4. Spanakopita 21 min

Filo is stretched by hand across the table for spanakopita, the camera following the guide's hands as the dough goes thin enough to see through.

  5. Rice pudding and the refugee story 21 min

While rice pudding simmers with cinnamon and mastic, the guide tells the story of the refugees of 1922 and what they brought with them into Greek cooking.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Athens: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Ouzo and Monastiraki, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Athens time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
