  • An hour comparing two eras of stonework

About this tour

This session compares two stretches of Avignon's ramparts side by side, one genuinely medieval and one rebuilt in the 19th century. You see the difference in stone quality and uniformity up close, from weathered original blocks to a cleaner restoration. Étienne explains the historical debate over how faithfully the walls should have been rebuilt in the first place.

The call opens with a sound check at the original stretch, then moves a short distance to the rebuilt one. Étienne keeps his answers direct and to the point, moving the session along at a steady pace. A short list of what was compared follows by message afterwards.

This suits anyone specifically interested in restoration history and how it is judged. It also pairs well with the longer ramparts walk for fuller context.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Avignon before heading out.

  2. A clearly original stretch 21 min

The camera holds on a section of wall with weathered, uneven stone typical of genuine medieval construction. I point out the tool marks still visible on some of the oldest blocks.

  3. A clearly rebuilt stretch 21 min

You see a nearby section with cleaner, more uniform stonework from a 19th-century restoration. I explain the debate at the time over how faithfully to rebuild versus how much to modernise.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Avignon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Ratatouille and Intra-muros old town, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Paris time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
