Nearly four kilometres of ramparts

- Seventy-five minutes along the ramparts
About this tour
This walk follows a long stretch of Avignon's nearly four kilometres of ramparts, from a well-preserved medieval section to a noticeably different 19th-century rebuild. You see the towers and machicolations of the original walls before finding out how much of what stands today was actually restored later. Étienne, who has walked sections of these walls for years, explains which parts are genuinely medieval and which are not.
The call opens with a sound check at the first section, then follows the wall at a brisk, direct pace. Étienne keeps his commentary focused and to the point, since the walls carry most of the visual interest themselves. A short list of the stops follows by message afterwards.
This suits anyone with a specific interest in military architecture or restoration history. It also works well for a longer, more active session than a typical old town walk.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Avignon before heading out.
-
Porte Saint-Lazare section 17 min
The camera takes in a well-preserved stretch of the medieval walls, towers spaced at regular intervals along the top. I point out the machicolations built for defence, still visible from ground level.
-
A rebuilt 19th-century section 17 min
You see a stretch where the walls were significantly rebuilt in the 1800s, the stonework noticeably different in colour and finish. I explain why so much restoration was needed by that point.
-
Rocher des Doms corner 17 min
The camera reaches the point where the ramparts meet the base of the Rocher des Doms hill. I point out how the fortifications used the natural rock formation to their advantage.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Avignon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Tapenade and Rue des Teinturiers quarter, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
