Swimming with the Rhine's current
Highlights
- A local habit built around the current
- A sealed bag for dry belongings
- Swimming with the river, not against it
- A generations-old summer routine
- Basel's river, seen as locals use it
About this tour
This session looks at one of Basel's most distinctive summer habits. You see locals preparing to swim downstream with a sealed bag for their belongings, then the point further along where most climb back out. It stays along this one stretch of the river throughout.
I explain the current and the local routine first, then follow the same stretch down to the usual exit point. Questions about the habit and the river itself are welcome throughout.
This suits anyone curious about everyday local life here rather than the city's monuments. It also suits anyone planning to try the swim themselves and wanting to understand it first.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
