Bath Skyline: the view above the city
Highlights
- A folly built for the view alone
- Iron Age earthworks above the city
- Bath laid out in one long shot
- A circular walk above the valley
- The abbey tower seen from height
About this tour
This longer call follows the Bath Skyline, a circular walk above the city with views that change at almost every rise. You see a folly built for effect, faint traces of an Iron Age fort and, at the end, the whole Georgian city laid out below. I keep pace with the path rather than rushing between stops.
We start with a sound check on the first rise, then take the walk in four stages, stopping longer at the viewpoints. It runs at a relaxed pace with room for questions throughout, and I send photos and a short route note afterwards.
It suits anyone who wants to see Bath from above rather than only from its streets. It also works well early in the morning when the light is best.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 10 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Bath before heading out.
-
Bathwick Fields 21 min
From the first rise above the river you already see the abbey tower and the curve of the valley, and I point out how the whole city sits in a bowl of hills.
-
Sham Castle 21 min
You reach a folly built purely to improve the view from a merchant's house in the valley below, a stone facade with nothing behind it, which I explain as the camera moves around it.
-
Old hillfort banks 21 min
Faint banks in the grass mark an Iron Age hillfort far older than the Georgian city below, and I trace the line of the old earthworks with the camera.
-
Final viewpoint over Bath 21 min
From the last high point, the whole of Georgian Bath spreads out below in one long shot, terraces, the abbey and the river all visible at once before we start back down.
-
Your questions 18 min
Time to ask anything about Bath: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 8 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Sally Lunn bun and Southgate, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
