Bom Jesus and the climb above the city
Highlights
- A Baroque stairway, zigzag by zigzag
- Fountains shaped like faces and figures
- The funicular climbing the slope
- A terrace above the whole city
- Braga's roofs and towers, named one by one
About this tour
This session climbs the Baroque stairway at Bom Jesus, the hilltop sanctuary that has drawn visitors above Braga since the 18th century. Rui follows the zigzag path between its fountains and chapels before reaching the terrace at the top. From there you look back over the whole city, with the earlier landmarks visible in the distance.
The call starts with a short check of the connection before Rui begins the climb, timing his pace so the view opens up gradually rather than all at once. He takes questions at each landing and answers them properly rather than rushing on. A short list of what the stairway's symbols represent follows by message.
This suits anyone who wants Braga's best-known view without the climb, or who already knows the old town and wants to see how it looks from above. It also works well paired with an earlier session on the Roman city below.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Braga before heading out.
-
The zigzag stairway 17 min
The camera follows the Baroque staircase as it doubles back on itself between fountains and small chapels. Rui stops at one fountain shaped like a face and explains what each set of steps is meant to represent.
-
The upper terrace 17 min
At the top, the white sanctuary sits behind a wide terrace looking back down the stairway. You see pilgrims and visitors mixed together, and Rui points out the funicular car climbing the slope beside the steps.
-
The view over Braga 17 min
From the edge of the terrace, the whole city spreads out below, roofs and towers picked out against the hills. Rui names the landmarks visible from here, tying the earlier stops in the old town back to this wider view.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Braga: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Papas de sarrabulho and Gualtar, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
