  • Braga's arcaded main square
  • A café arcade open since 1874
  • Balconies unchanged since the 19th century

About this tour

This session covers the small arcaded square at the centre of Braga and the old gateway that once marked the edge of the walled town. Rui starts at the arch, tracing the line the walls used to follow, then moves to the square itself. You see the café's arcade and the buildings that frame the square from three sides.

Rui checks the picture is steady before he sets off, then narrates as he crosses from the arch to the square, pausing wherever the light on the stone is worth a longer look. He answers questions as they come rather than saving them for the end, and a short note on what you saw follows the call.

It suits a first session in Braga, since it covers ground most later tours refer back to. It also works well for anyone short on time who wants a compact sense of the old town's centre.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Braga before heading out.

  2. Arco da Porta Nova 21 min

The old gateway frames the street beyond it, and you see the coat of arms cut into the stone above the arch. Rui explains why the walls it once closed came down in the 19th century while the gate itself stayed standing.

  3. Praça da República 21 min

The square opens out with its arcaded café on one side, tables already out even in the morning. Rui points to the balconies above the arcade and describes how the square has kept the same shape since the 19th century.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Braga: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Rojões à moda do Minho and São Vicente, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Lisbon time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
