About this tour

This session covers the excavated Roman bathhouse and theatre found beneath the modern city, a site Miguel worked on for two summers as an archaeology student. He traces the route water took through the bathhouse before moving to the theatre remains set into the hillside beside it. Both stops sit below current street level, uncovered rather than reconstructed.

Miguel narrates plainly, since the stones carry their own weight without embellishment, and he checks the connection before moving between the two sites. He answers questions about the dig itself in as much detail as viewers want, drawing on his own time on the excavation. A short reading list on Bracara Augusta follows by message.

This suits anyone with a specific interest in Roman archaeology rather than a general city overview. It also works well as background before or after a session on Braga's later, medieval landmarks.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Braga before heading out.

  2. The excavated bathhouse 21 min

The camera holds on the low walls of the bathhouse, and Miguel traces the route water once took between the rooms. He points out the flue channels that carried heat under the floor of the hot room.

  3. The adjoining theatre remains 21 min

Beside the baths, the outline of a small Roman theatre is set into the hillside. Miguel explains how the two structures were found together during the same excavation and what that told archaeologists about the size of Roman Bracara Augusta.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Braga: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Broa de milho and Gualtar, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Lisbon time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
