About this tour

This session follows the Danube out to Devín castle and the stretch of river once split by the Iron Curtain. The camera takes in the castle ruins, the Gate of Freedom memorial, and the concrete bunkers still standing along the bank, finishing across from the Petržalka housing estate. It traces a part of Bratislava's history that runs alongside the water rather than through its old streets.

The guide opens with a sound check, then moves along the river stop by stop, pausing at the memorial before continuing, with questions welcome throughout. A short list of the stops is sent once the call finishes.

This suits anyone interested in Cold War history or border history more generally. It also suits anyone who wants a quieter, more reflective session than a typical old town walk.

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Bratislava before heading out.

  2. Devín castle ruins 21 min

Standing among the ruins of Devín castle, the camera looks out over the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers, and the guide explains why this crossing has been contested for centuries.

  3. Gate of Freedom 21 min

At the Gate of Freedom memorial, the camera holds on the sculpture marking the spot where people were shot trying to cross the border, and the guide explains what this stretch of river meant during the Cold War.

  4. Iron Curtain bunkers 21 min

Along the riverbank, the camera passes concrete bunkers left over from the Iron Curtain years, and the guide describes how closely this section of the Danube was once guarded.

  5. Petržalka estate 21 min

Looking across at Petržalka, the camera takes in the rows of panel housing blocks built on the far bank, with the UFO bridge visible in the distance, and the guide explains how this estate grew after the border eased.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Bratislava: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Kapustnica and Castle Hill, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Bratislava time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
