The canals of Bruges, bank by bank
Highlights
- Leaning houses along the water
- An old lock, still working
- Centuries of managed water levels
- Bruges' canals, seen from the bank
- The waterways that built a city
About this tour
This session follows the canals of Bruges from the water's edge rather than from a boat. You see the leaning houses and small footbridges along one stretch, then stop at an old lock to hear how the water level was managed for centuries. It gives a street-level view of the waterways that shaped the whole city.
We start with a sound check along the bank, since some stretches can be busy with visitors. I move to the lock for the second stop and take your questions about the canals' history as we go. A short reading list follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone who wants to understand how the canals actually work rather than just look at them. It also works well paired with a session on one of the city's famous viewpoints.

Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
