  • The Danube's most sobering stop

About this tour

This session follows the riverbank in front of Parliament from its grandest facade to one of the city's most sobering memorials. You see the building itself, then the iron shoes set into the embankment, then the approach to the square behind it. It stays along this stretch of river throughout.

I keep a formal pace across the three stops after a short sound check, since the shift from architecture to memorial needs a careful transition. Questions about either the building or the memorial are welcome throughout.

This suits anyone who wants Budapest's political history explained properly rather than as a quick photo stop. It also pairs well with the Kossuth Square session for the fuller story behind the square itself.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Budapest before heading out.

  2. Parliament Riverside Facade 17 min

The camera holds on the Parliament building's riverside facade, and I explain how its scale was meant to match the grandest parliaments elsewhere in Europe.

  3. Shoes on the Danube Bank 17 min

You see the rows of iron shoes set into the embankment, and I explain who the memorial commemorates and why this exact stretch of riverbank was chosen.

  4. Kossuth Square Approach 17 min

The camera moves toward the square behind the building, and I point out how the space in front of Parliament has changed use across different governments.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Budapest: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Lángos and Pest riverside, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Budapest time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
