About this tour

This call is a slow walk through a Georgian public garden built around a much older earth mound. You see the tree-lined promenade first, then climb to the mound itself for a view back across the city walls. I explain how a fashionable 18th-century garden ended up sitting on something far older.

We move at an easy pace along the paths before climbing the mound together, leaving time for questions the whole way. A short note on the mound's older history follows by message.

This suits anyone who wants a calmer, greener session with a view at the end of it. It also works well early in the day before the garden gets busy.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Canterbury before heading out.

  2. The Georgian promenade 15 min

The camera follows the tree-lined path laid out in the 18th century, and I explain how the garden was designed as a fashionable place to walk rather than for its older history underneath.

  3. The earth mound viewpoint 15 min

You climb with me to the top of the ancient mound at the garden's edge, and I point out the view back across the old city walls from the highest point nearby.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Canterbury: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Romney Marsh lamb and St Dunstan's, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
