About this tour

This session walks Les Lices, the open ground between the Cité's two rings of walls, once used for tournaments and, during a siege, as a killing ground for trapped attackers. You see the dual purpose this narrow strip served across the fortress's history and where a lost watchtower once stood. It is a session built around one deceptively simple space with a complicated history.

We move along the strip at an easy pace, pausing at the watchtower gap and wherever the two walls frame an interesting view. Questions come in throughout, and I am happy to point the camera at anything someone wants a longer look at. A short note on the space's history follows the call.

This suits anyone who wants to understand how the fortress actually worked rather than just admire it from outside. It also works well paired with a walk along the outer ramparts.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Carcassonne before heading out.

  2. The tournament ground 21 min

The camera follows the open strip between the inner and outer walls, once used for jousts and tournaments when the fortress was at peace. I explain how the same space that hosted festivities doubled as a killing ground during a siege.

  3. A watchtower gap 21 min

Partway along, you look up through a gap where a watchtower once stood, since demolished but still visible in the wall's outline. I point out how this exact stretch has been identified from old drawings of the Cité.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Carcassonne: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Blanquette de Limoux and Bastide Saint-Louis, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Paris time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
