Pierhead Building and the Bay's Victorian dock
Highlights
- A clock tower built for coal exports
- Cardiff's Victorian docks at their peak
- A dock basin now a still lake
- Coal that shaped a whole stretch of city
- A working history behind pretty buildings
About this tour
This call looks at the Pierhead Building and the old dock basin beside it, the working heart of Cardiff's Victorian coal export trade. You see the ornate clock tower up close and the still water where cargo ships once queued to load. I explain how coal shaped this entire stretch of the city.
We start with a sound check by the tower, then walk the dock basin edge, pausing for the history of the trade itself. Questions come up throughout, and I send a short note on the docks' working years afterwards.
It suits anyone interested in industrial or maritime history. It also pairs well with a wider Cardiff Bay walking session.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

- A short list of places to visit later

Walking along the edge of the old dock basin, now a still-water lake, I explain how it once handled more coal exports than almost anywhere else in the world.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
