A cathedral and the fresco above it
Highlights
- A facade built to be the country's second largest
- A ceiling painted to look deeper than it is
- Two grand buildings, side by side
- Baroque and Neoclassical, compared directly
- Eger's centre, explained through its architecture
About this tour
This session pairs two of Eger's grandest buildings, the basilica and the Lyceum beside it. You see the basilica's Neoclassical facade and then the Lyceum's painted ceiling, with an explanation of the illusion built into its fresco. It stays around these two buildings throughout.
I keep a warm, unhurried pace across both stops after a short sound check, since the painted details reward a slower look. Questions about either building's construction are always welcome.
This suits anyone with an interest in Baroque and Neoclassical architecture rather than a general town walk. It also pairs well with the camera obscura session for a fuller look at the Lyceum.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

- A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Eger before heading out.
-
Eger Basilica Facade 21 min
The camera holds on the Neoclassical facade of the basilica, and I explain how it became the second largest church built in the country during the early nineteenth century.
-
Lyceum Ceiling Fresco 21 min
You see the painted ceiling inside the nearby Lyceum, and I point out the trompe l'oeil details that make the dome look far deeper than it actually is.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Eger: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Halászlé and Vár (Castle District), worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Budapest time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
