A camera obscura still doing its job
Highlights
- A working device built in the 1700s
- The town projected live, upside down
- Historic optics, explained simply
- A tower that still does its original job
- Eger seen through a centuries old lens
About this tour
This session shows the Lyceum's camera obscura, a working eighteenth century device that still projects the town live onto a screen. You see the climb to its tower and then the projection itself in action, with an explanation of how the optics work. It stays within the tower throughout.
I keep a warm pace and take real care explaining the mechanics, since the device surprises most people the first time they see it work. Questions about the optics and the tower's history are welcome throughout.
This suits anyone curious about historic technology as much as architecture. It also pairs well with the basilica session for a fuller visit to the Lyceum complex.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

- A short list of places to visit later
Not included

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Eger before heading out.
-
Lyceum Tower Entrance 15 min
The camera climbs toward the tower housing an eighteenth century camera obscura, and I explain how the device works and why it still functions today.
-
Live Projection Demonstration 15 min
You see the device project the town live onto a screen inside, and I point out landmarks as they appear upside down and moving in real time.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Eger: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Kürtőskalács and Belváros (Town Centre), worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Budapest time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
