Accademia Gallery and Michelangelo's David
Highlights
- The exact spot where David once stood
- A full-size replica outside Palazzo Vecchio
- Why the statue's hands and head are oversized
- The bronze David overlooking the city
- How the marble reached Florence from Carrara
About this tour
This session follows the story of Michelangelo's David through its two outdoor copies rather than the original inside the Accademia. The camera moves from the full-size replica standing where the statue first stood, outside Palazzo Vecchio, to the bronze version overlooking the city from Piazzale Michelangelo. Along the way it covers how the marble reached Florence and why the statue eventually moved indoors.
After a sound check, the walk moves between the two copies in order, with the guide taking questions about proportion, history and the marble itself throughout. A short note on visiting the original in the Accademia goes out once the call ends.
This suits anyone who wants the David story told properly without needing a ticket to the Accademia, and anyone planning a future visit who wants context first. It also suits anyone who has seen photos of the statue and wants to understand why it looks the way it does.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 10 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Florence before heading out.
-
David outside Palazzo Vecchio 21 min
The camera stands where Michelangelo's original David once stood for centuries, in front of Palazzo Vecchio, now marked by a full-size replica, and the guide explains why the statue was moved indoors in 1873.
-
The replica up close 21 min
Looking closely at the replica's proportions, the guide points out the oversized hands and head, a choice originally made so the figure would read correctly from high on the cathedral roofline where it was first meant to stand.
-
Piazzale Michelangelo 21 min
At Piazzale Michelangelo, the camera finds the bronze copy of David overlooking the whole city, and the guide compares this version with the white marble original hidden away in the Accademia.
-
The story of the marble 21 min
Closing the walk, the guide explains how the block of Carrara marble reached Florence and passed through two other sculptors' hands before Michelangelo ever touched it.
-
Your questions 18 min
Time to ask anything about Florence: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 8 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Lampredotto and Oltrarno, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
