Bankenviertel, the district behind Mainhattan
Highlights
- The district behind the Mainhattan nickname
- A plaza framed by high-rise towers
- An older building that survived redevelopment
- Ground-level views of a financial skyline
- Decades of change, explained street by street
About this tour
This session looks at the Bankenviertel from ground level, the district that gave Frankfurt its Mainhattan nickname. You see a plaza framed by high-rise towers and an older building that survived redevelopment among them, and hear how the district's character has shifted over recent decades. It moves through the district's plazas and street corners.
We move between a few close points, and I explain the district's development and its nickname as we go, keeping the pace steady rather than rushing. Questions about specific buildings come naturally. A short note on the district's history follows by message.
It suits anyone curious about how a financial district actually looks and feels up close. It also pairs well with the Main Tower session for the view from above first.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Frankfurt before heading out.
-
Tower plaza 15 min
The camera holds on a plaza between two high-rise towers, and I explain how the nickname Mainhattan came about and whether locals actually use it themselves.
-
Older building among towers 15 min
Beside the towers, you see an older, smaller building that survived the district's redevelopment, and I explain why it was kept rather than replaced.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Frankfurt: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Handkäse mit Musik (cheese with onions) and Bornheim, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Berlin time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
