About this tour

This session takes you through the Mercado dos Lavradores floor by floor, from the flower stalls on the ground level to the fruit and fish halls above and below. You see fruit that rarely leaves the island and hear why the fish hall smells the way it does. Catarina finishes at a single painted door nearby to close the loop back to the old town.

After a quick sound check the call follows the market's own layout, flowers first, then fruit, then fish, before a short walk outside. Catarina asks questions of the sellers on camera so you hear their answers directly rather than through her.

This suits food-curious viewers who want to understand a market rather than just see it. It also works for anyone planning their own trip who wants a sense of what to look for once they arrive.

Included

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Funchal before heading out.

  2. Flower stalls 17 min

Inside the market's ground floor, sellers arrange strelitzias and agapanthus into tight bunches. I ask one of the regular sellers to show you how fast she wraps a bouquet by hand.

  3. Fruit and fish halls 17 min

Upstairs the fruit hall holds custard apples, maracujá and bananas grown on the island's south coast, while downstairs the fish hall smells of the sea. I explain which fruits are only ever sold here.

  4. Rua de Santa Maria doorway 17 min

A short walk from the market, the camera settles on a single painted door on Rua de Santa Maria. I tell you the story behind the image and point out the stall next to it baking bolo do caco.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Funchal: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bolo do caco and Sé, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Madeira time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

Questions about this tour

What will the session cover?

What happens if my connection drops?

Rejoin with the same link within a few minutes and the guide will catch you up on anything you missed.

Can I ask the guide questions during the session, or is it a fixed script?

Anything, any time. Sessions leave room for your own questions throughout, not just at the end.

Do I need to buy or cook anything?

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
