Highlights

  • A working windmill rebuilt after a 1932 fire

  • A river once busy with brewery barges
  • A calmer, more visual riverside session
  • A fuller look at the quieter side of the city

About this tour

This session follows the river that runs through Haarlem to a working windmill on its bank, tracing how the mill was rebuilt after a fire nearly a century ago. You see the mill's sails up close and then the river itself, once a working route for the city's breweries. It is a calmer, more visual session than the busiest museum stops.

We walk along the riverside at an easy pace, spending the most time at the mill since there is the most to explain there. I answer questions about either the mill's mechanism or the river's history.

It suits anyone who enjoys a slower, more visual session over a dense history walk. It pairs well with the park session for a fuller look at the quieter side of the city.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Haarlem before heading out.

  2. Windmill De Adriaan 21 min

You see a working windmill on the bank of the Spaarne, rebuilt after a fire destroyed the original in 1932, and I explain how its sails are still turned to face the wind by hand.

  3. Spaarne Riverside 21 min

The camera follows the river that runs through the centre, and I point out how it once carried barges from the city's breweries rather than pleasure boats.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Haarlem: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Poffertjes and Binnenstad, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
