About this tour

This session walks the sea fortress of Suomenlinna, from its eighteenth-century main gate to a dry dock still working today and the outer walls facing the open sea. You see how the whole complex was designed to defend the harbour from multiple angles at once. I explain the engineering across several connected islands rather than treating it as one simple fort.

We move island section by section at a steady pace, since the fortress only makes sense laid out this way. I take questions from years working the ferry crossing itself before I ever guided. The session runs longer than most to give the whole complex proper time.

This suits anyone with a real interest in military history or fortification design. It also works well as a half-day anchor session, since there is genuinely this much to see.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Helsinki before heading out.

  2. The main gate 21 min

You see the fortress entrance built in the seventeen hundreds, and I explain how its defences were designed to cover the whole approach to Helsinki's harbour.

  3. The dry dock 21 min

The camera reaches a dry dock still in active use today, and I point out how an eighteenth-century structure adapted to modern shipbuilding needs.

  4. The outer walls 21 min

We follow the walls facing open sea, and I explain the layered defence system built across several connected islands rather than a single fort.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Helsinki: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Salmon soup (lohikeitto) and Kallio, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Helsinki time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
