About this tour
This session shows the spine of Kilkenny's old walled town, from the castle above the river to the stepped laneway known as the Butter Slip. You see the scale of the Norman keep against the water, then the tighter, older streets that grew up around it over the following centuries. It moves at a walking pace, so you get the shift from open riverside to narrow medieval lane in real time.
We start with a short sound check and I confirm the route with you before we set off. Each stop gets a few minutes of quiet camera work followed by my own explanation, and I stop to take questions as they come rather than saving them up. Afterwards I send a short list of what we covered with a couple of names to look up further.
It suits anyone curious about how a small medieval town actually fits together, not just its headline building. It also works well for people planning their own visit later and wanting a proper sense of the streets first.

You see the grey Norman keep rising over the River Nore, and I explain how the Butler family held the castle for close to six hundred years before handing it to the city.

The Butter Slip 21 min
The camera drops into a narrow stepped laneway between two streets, and I point out the seventeenth-century stonework that gives the passage its name.

A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Smithwick's ale and High Town, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
