A cloth merchants' hall turned art museum, live
Highlights
- A cloth merchants' hall turned art museum
- A trade that once defined the city's economy
- A modern extension built beside the original
- The building's own history, not just its art
- A fuller museum-quarter picture
About this tour
This session looks at a former cloth merchants' hall turned art and design museum, tracing how the building's grand front reflects a trade that once defined the city's economy. You see the seventeenth-century facade and then the courtyard where a modern extension sits carefully alongside the original building. It is a session about the building's own history as much as the art inside it.
We spend most of the time on the facade and courtyard, since that is what the camera can properly show. I explain the textile trade's importance to the city as we look at the building.
It suits anyone interested in economic history and architecture together. It pairs well with the antiquities museum session for a fuller museum-quarter picture.

You see a seventeenth-century cloth merchants' hall with a grand classical front, and I explain how the building reflects how important the textile trade once was to this city.
-
Museum Courtyard 15 min
The camera looks into the building's courtyard, and I point out how the modern extension was built to sit alongside the original hall rather than replace any of it.

-
A short list to keep 3 min

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
