The student city: Fonske to the library tower
Highlights
- Fonske, Leuven's bronze student
- The rebuilt library tower explained
- A carillon above the university
- Grote Markt in late light
- A university town, start to finish
About this tour
This session traces student Leuven from the Fonske statue to the university library tower and back to the Grote Markt. You see the bronze statue up close, then the rebuilt library with its carillon, and finally the town hall in late light. Together the three stops tell the story of a city built around its university.
We begin with a short check of light and sound since this route runs late in the day. I take the three stops slowly and stop fully at each one for your questions before moving on. Afterwards I send a short note on the library's history for anyone who wants to read further.
It suits anyone interested in university towns and twentieth-century history, since the library's story runs through both world wars. It also works well paired with an earlier daytime session for a fuller picture of the city.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

- A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Leuven before heading out.
-
Fonske statue 21 min
The camera finds the bronze student reading his book, a landmark meeting spot for generations, and I explain the tradition of dressing him up for exams and festivals.
-
University Library 21 min
We stand across from the rebuilt library tower, and I point out the carillon and the plaques recording its two wartime reconstructions.
-
Grote Markt at closing 21 min
We finish back on the main square as the light turns gold on the Stadhuis stone, a good last shot of the old university town.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Leuven: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Leuvense stoofvlees (beef and beer stew) and Naamsestraat, worth a slower look.

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
