The Renier de Huy font, a Romanesque masterwork
Highlights
- A twin-towered church, centuries intact
- A bronze font, described in detail
- Renier de Huy's finest surviving work
- Mosan art, explained on camera
- Liège's medieval metalwork tradition
About this tour
This session covers the Collégiale Saint-Barthélemy and the bronze font it holds, cast by the medieval metalworker Renier de Huy. You see the church's twin-towered facade and hear why it survived largely intact through centuries of conflict, then hear a detailed description of the font's scenes from the chapel doorway. It is a focused look at one of the finest surviving works of Mosan art.
We start with a sound check outside the church, since the street can carry some traffic noise. I describe the font carefully from where filming is allowed, then take your questions about the artist or the church as we go. A short reading list follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone with an interest in medieval metalwork or Romanesque architecture. It also works well before visiting the church yourself, as background for what is inside.

-
Collégiale Saint-Barthélemy exterior 15 min
The camera takes in the church's twin-towered facade, and I explain why it survived largely intact through centuries of conflict.
-
Font chapel doorway 15 min
From the chapel doorway you see the bronze baptismal font cast by Renier de Huy, and I describe its scenes in detail since filming it up close is not permitted.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Liege: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Boulets a la liegeoise (meatballs in a sweet-sour sauce) and Saint-Leonard, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- Times are shown in Brussels time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 7 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
