About this tour

This session covers Lille's opera house, rebuilt within a few years after a 1903 fire destroyed the building that stood there before. Antoine walks from the Belle Époque facade to the nearby Grand Place to show how the opera's ornate style sits against the square's older architecture. The two stops together trace two very different moments in the city's rebuilding.

Antoine opens outside the opera house with a short sound check. He keeps a lively pace toward the square, answering questions about the fire and the rebuilding as they arrive, and sends a short summary once the call ends.

It suits anyone interested in Belle Époque architecture or the history of European opera houses. It also works well paired with a general first look at the square.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lille before heading out.

  2. Opéra de Lille 21 min

The camera holds on the opera house's Belle Époque facade, and Antoine explains how the building was rebuilt within a few years after a fire destroyed its predecessor in 1903.

  3. Grand Place 21 min

A short walk away, the camera crosses the main square, and Antoine points out how the opera's ornate style contrasts with the square's older Flemish buildings.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Lille: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Maroilles and Vauban-Esquermes, worth a slower look.

  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
