About this tour

This session walks Ajuda's Botanical Garden, one of the oldest of its kind in Portugal, laid out in terraces on a slope beside the palace. You see the terraced beds designed to let different climates grow close together, then one of the garden's oldest specimen trees. I trained as a gardener before guiding, and this collection is where I feel most useful with a camera.

We start with a sound check on the terraces, then move to the specimen tree for the second stop, taking your questions about individual plants along the way. I send a short list of species named once the session ends.

It suits anyone interested in botany and garden history specifically, and travellers looking for a quiet, green corner of Lisbon. This session covers the public garden paths, not any greenhouse or research building.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lisbon before heading out.

  2. The terraced beds 15 min

The camera follows the garden's terraced layout, and I explain how this 18th-century design let different climate zones grow side by side.

  3. A rare specimen tree 15 min

We stop at one of the garden's older specimen trees, and I explain how it came to Lisbon and why it has survived this long.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Lisbon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Ginjinha and Alfama, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Lisbon time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
