  • Castle walls and river in one view
  • Alfama before the crowds arrive
  • A local's honest, unhurried pace

About this tour

This session walks Alfama before the coach parties arrive, starting in a narrow lane still strung with washing lines and finishing at a terrace looking out over the rooftops to the river. You see the district's oldest surviving streets, then the wider view connecting the castle above to the water below. Alfama is the part of Lisbon that survived the 1755 earthquake largely intact, and it shows in the layout underfoot.

We start with a short sound check in the lane, then climb toward the terrace, pausing at each stop for your questions about the earthquake and the neighbourhood's history. I send a short list of the streets and names covered once the session ends.

It suits early risers who want Alfama without its usual crowds, and anyone curious about the one part of central Lisbon that mostly predates the 1755 disaster. This session covers public lanes and a terrace, not the inside of any private building.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lisbon before heading out.

  2. The washing-line lanes 21 min

The camera moves through a narrow lane still hung with washing lines, and I explain how these alleys survived the 1755 earthquake while much of the rest of the city fell.

  3. A rooftop view 21 min

We climb to a small terrace overlooking the rooftops toward the river, and I point out the castle walls above and the Tagus below in the same frame.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Lisbon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Ginjinha and Belém, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Lisbon time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
