About this tour

This session walks Baixa's grid, the downtown district rebuilt from scratch after the 1755 earthquake destroyed most of what stood here before. You see a stretch of near-identical facades built using an early prefabricated method, then Rua Augusta running straight toward its arch. I studied architecture before guiding, and this planned rebuilding is the part of Lisbon that interests me most.

We start with a sound check at the repeated facades, then walk the grid toward Rua Augusta, pausing for questions about the rebuilding plan. I send a short list of names and dates once the session ends.

It suits anyone interested in urban planning and disaster recovery specifically, not only Lisbon's more decorative sights. This session covers the public grid and street level rather than any building's interior.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lisbon before heading out.

  2. A repeated facade 21 min

The camera shows a stretch of near-identical building facades, and I explain how the Marquis of Pombal's rebuilding plan used an early form of prefabrication after the 1755 earthquake.

  3. Rua Augusta 21 min

We walk down Rua Augusta toward the arch, and I point out the strict grid pattern still visible from ground level.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Lisbon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bifana and Belém, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Lisbon time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking".
