Fado's Alfama, doorways and guitar shops
Highlights
- A guitar built by hand, explained
- A fado house doorway before opening
- Tile work above a hidden chapel door
- Fado's roots traced through real streets
- Alfama's music history, not a performance
About this tour
This session walks Alfama's connection to fado, from a guitar maker's workshop window to the doorway of a small fado house as it prepares for the evening. You see the instrument being built by hand, the house where the music is performed, and a quiet chapel tucked between the surrounding buildings. It traces the neighbourhood's link to the music without stepping inside any performance itself.
We check the connection at the workshop window, then move house to chapel, leaving time for questions about the music's history at each stop. I send a short list of names and shop locations once the session ends.
It suits anyone curious about fado's origins and how the music is tied to this specific part of Lisbon. This session shows the streets and doorways connected to fado rather than a performance itself, since sessions do not include any live music.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lisbon before heading out.
-
A guitar maker's window 17 min
The camera pauses at a workshop window where Portuguese guitars are still built by hand, and I explain how the instrument's shape differs from a classical guitar.
-
A fado house doorway 17 min
We stop outside a small fado house as it prepares for the evening, and I explain how the genre grew out of exactly these narrow Alfama streets.
-
A quiet chapel 17 min
We pass a small chapel tucked between houses, and I point out the tile work above its door that most visitors walk straight past.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Lisbon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bacalhau (salt cod) and Bairro Alto, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Lisbon time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
