About this tour

This session walks Rossio Square, the traditional heart of downtown Lisbon and a space that has served very different purposes across several centuries. You see the wave-patterned pavement that gave this style of paving its name, then the neoclassical theatre facing the square today. As an architect by training, I find the layering of uses here more interesting than any single period of the square's history.

We check the connection at the pavement pattern, then move to the theatre for the second stop, taking questions about the square's changing uses over time. I send a short list of names and dates once the session ends.

It suits anyone curious about how a single public space can carry centuries of different history, and first-time visitors to central Lisbon. This session covers the square and its surrounding facades, not the inside of the theatre.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lisbon before heading out.

  2. The wave pavement 15 min

The camera follows the wave-patterned pavement across the square, and I explain how this style of Portuguese paving spread from squares just like this one.

  3. The theatre facade 15 min

We move to the neoclassical theatre facing the square, and I point out how the square's uses have shifted across several centuries of Lisbon's history.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Lisbon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Pastel de nata and Alfama, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Lisbon time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking".
