Carnival routes through Notting Hill
Highlights
- A festival's growth from a small gathering
- Sound system pitches held for generations
- Caribbean-British history on ordinary streets
- A parade route seen in quiet season
- One event, decades of community history
About this tour
This session walks the Notting Hill Carnival's parade route outside festival season, when the streets are quiet enough to properly explain how the event began and grew. It covers the carnival's origins in the 1960s and the sound system tradition that still holds specific street corners each year. It links a huge annual event to the ordinary streets it happens on.
We start at the parade's traditional beginning point with its history, then move to a sound system corner for the tradition behind it. Questions about the carnival's Caribbean roots and its growth come up steadily, and I answer from my own community's connection to the event. I close with a note on how the area changes during the festival itself.
It suits anyone interested in Caribbean-British history and community culture. It also suits visitors planning to attend the carnival itself who want background beforehand.

The camera holds on the street where the carnival parade traditionally begins, and I explain how the event grew from a small indoor gathering in the 1960s into one of Europe's largest street festivals.

At a corner known for hosting a sound system during the festival, I explain how different sound systems have held the same pitches for generations, passed down within families and crews.

Time to ask anything about London: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min

Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
