Croix-Rousse's murals, scale and story
Highlights
- One of Europe's largest painted murals
- Trompe l'oeil figures mistaken for real
- A second mural, differently styled
- A growing district-wide art tradition
- An hour of scale and detail
About this tour
This session shows the scale of Croix-Rousse's mural scene, starting at one of Europe's largest painted walls and finishing at a smaller, differently styled piece nearby. You see the trompe l'oeil figures up close, easy to mistake for real people from a distance. Charlotte, who grew up on the hill, explains how the district's mural tradition has grown since it began.
The call opens with a sound check facing the first mural, then moves a short distance to the second. Charlotte holds steady on each piece long enough for the scale to register properly, answering questions warmly throughout. A short list of what was shown follows by message afterwards.
This suits anyone interested in public art and street murals specifically. It also suits viewers who enjoy Croix-Rousse's creative, independent character.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lyon before heading out.
-
Mur des Canuts 21 min
The camera pulls back to take in one of Europe's largest painted murals, its trompe l'oeil figures nearly life-sized against a full building façade. I point out details that only become visible once you know they are painted rather than real.
-
A smaller neighbourhood mural 21 min
You see a second, smaller mural a few streets away, styled very differently from the first. I explain how the district's mural scene has grown and changed since it began.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Lyon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Andouillette and Vieux Lyon, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Paris time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
