Croix-Rousse silk workers, their traboules and their revolts
Highlights
- The Cour des Voraces, a six-storey open staircase
- A working Jacquard loom, thread by thread
- Routes of the 1831 and 1834 canut uprisings
- The Mur des Canuts painted wall
- Canut flats built tall enough for the looms
About this tour
This session walks Croix-Rousse, the hill where Lyon's silk workers once lived and worked, from the Cour des Voraces staircase to a working Jacquard loom. You see canut flats built tall enough for looms and the Mur des Canuts painted wall. It traces the routes the 1831 and 1834 uprisings took through the neighbourhood.
The guide opens with a sound check, then climbs the hill stop by stop, explaining how the streets and stairways served the silk trade and its revolts. Questions come in live, and a short list of what was covered follows by message afterwards.
This suits anyone interested in labour history told through the buildings that housed it. It also suits viewers who love traboules and hidden passageways.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lyon before heading out.
-
Cour des Voraces 21 min
The camera climbs the Cour des Voraces, a six-storey open staircase built straight through a Croix-Rousse tenement. The guide explains how the canuts, the silk workers who lived here, used it to move between streets during the uprisings.
-
A weaving workshop 21 min
Inside a weaving workshop, the guide shows a working Jacquard loom, its punched cards still controlling the pattern thread by thread. He explains how this same mechanism is often credited as an early ancestor of computer programming.
-
Mur des Canuts 21 min
The walk passes canut flats built with four-metre ceilings to fit the looms inside, before reaching the Mur des Canuts, a painted wall showing the neighbourhood as it once looked. The guide traces the route the 1831 and 1834 uprisings took through these same streets.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Lyon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Quenelles and Vieux Lyon, worth a slower look.

- Times are shown in Paris time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
