From silk hill to street art hill
Highlights
- A hilltop view explaining the silk trade's location
- Tall windows built for weaving looms
- A mural remembering a vanished trade
- Two identities on one hill, connected
- Seventy-five minutes of layered history
About this tour
This session traces Croix-Rousse's shift from a silk-weaving district to one known for street art, using a viewpoint, a former workshop window and a mural that references the trade directly. You see why the elevation originally suited the silk trade, then how the district later chose to remember it through art instead. Charlotte explains the connection between the hill's two very different identities.
The call opens with a sound check at the viewpoint, then moves at a relaxed pace between the workshop and the mural. Charlotte answers questions warmly and connects each stop back to the broader story rather than treating them separately. A short list of the stops follows by message afterwards.
This suits anyone interested in how a neighbourhood's history shapes its present identity. It also suits viewers who have already seen the murals and want the history behind them.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lyon before heading out.
-
Croix-Rousse viewpoint 17 min
The camera takes in the view back over Lyon from the hill's edge, the reason silk weavers originally settled this high up made obvious from here. I point out the light quality that made the elevation useful for the trade.
-
A former weaver's workshop window 17 min
You see the distinctively tall windows of a former silk workshop, built specifically for the looms that once filled the space. I explain what happened to the trade once it moved elsewhere.
-
A mural referencing the silk trade 17 min
The camera settles on a mural depicting weavers, painted decades after the trade itself disappeared from the hill. I point out how the district chose to remember its own history through the murals rather than a museum.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Lyon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Quenelles and Croix-Rousse, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
