A monastery turned hotel and a museum's strange dome
Highlights
- A glass structure fitted inside a monastery
- The old stone walls left fully visible
- A museum's dome shaped like nothing else
- Two centuries, a short walk apart
- A quicker follow-up to the longer art walk
About this tour
This session looks at two very different ways of putting something new inside or next to something very old, a converted monastery and a purpose-built modern museum. You see a glass structure fitted carefully inside a medieval church and then a completely new building with a shape unlike anything else in the city. The two stops sit only a short walk apart but feel like different centuries.
We spend longer at the monastery since the interior needs more explaining, then move to the museum exterior for a quicker, more visual stop. I leave room for questions about either building at the end rather than only after each one.
It suits anyone interested in architecture and how a city handles its old buildings. Viewers who enjoyed my other art session tend to book this one as a shorter follow-up.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Maastricht before heading out.
-
Kruisherenhotel 21 min
You see a fifteenth-century monastery church fitted with a glass mezzanine and lift built inside its old nave, and I explain how the design keeps the original stone walls fully visible.
-
Bonnefantenmuseum Exterior 21 min
The camera looks up at the museum's rocket-shaped dome, and I compare its bold modern shape directly with the monastery we just left.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Maastricht: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Limburgse vlaai and Céramique, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
