Manchester's canals and towpath, a history walk
Highlights
- Britain's first industrial canal
- Loading doors set high in brick
- A towpath between old warehouses
- Where Manchester's growth began
- Water older than the city's factories
About this tour
This call follows the start of the Bridgewater Canal on foot, from open water toward the warehouses of Castlefield. You see the towpath, the old loading doors set high in the brick walls, and the canal that helped start Manchester's industrial growth. I explain what the canal carried and how it changed the city.
We start with a sound check by the water, then walk the towpath at an easy pace, stopping to look up at the warehouses. Questions come in naturally, and I send a short list of dates afterwards.
It suits anyone interested in industrial history away from the more famous museums. It also works as a calm, short call between busier ones.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

- A short list of places to visit later

Bridgewater Canal start point 15 min
You see the stretch of the Bridgewater Canal, opened in 1761 as Britain's first industrial canal, and I explain what it was built to carry and why it mattered.
-
Towpath toward Castlefield 15 min
The camera follows the towpath as it narrows between old warehouse walls, and I point out the loading doors still visible several storeys up.

Time to ask anything about Manchester: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Chip barm and Rusholme, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
