Whitworth Art Gallery: the park brought inside
Highlights
- A gallery built around its trees
- Glass extension added in 2015
- Light changing room by room
- Park views from inside a gallery
- Architecture that shares space with nature
About this tour
This call looks at the Whitworth Art Gallery from its 2015 glass extension, where Whitworth Park becomes part of the room. You see the extension itself and the park-facing galleries built to make the most of it. I explain why the building was designed around its trees instead of removing them.
We start with a sound check by the glass, then move room to room along the park side, taking questions as we go. I send a short note on the current display afterwards.
It suits anyone interested in how modern architecture can sit gently next to a Victorian park. It also works well as a calmer stop between busier calls.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

- A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Manchester before heading out.
-
Glass extension 21 min
You see the 2015 glass wing that opened the gallery onto Whitworth Park, and I explain why the extension was built around the trees rather than over them.
-
Park-facing gallery rooms 21 min
The camera turns to the rooms overlooking the park, and I point out how the changing light through the glass affects which pieces are shown there.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Manchester: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fish and chips and Ancoats, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
