About this tour

This session moves through Deyrulzafaran Monastery, from its stone courtyard to a view of the surrounding fields. You see the courtyard where the community has gathered since the 5th century, the exterior of the main chapel, and the fields once used to grow the saffron that gave the monastery its name. Each stop adds to a picture of a site still in active use after so many centuries.

I begin with a sound check in the courtyard, then we move around the grounds while you ask questions about the community's history. I explain the shared architectural details with other Syriac sites in the region. Afterwards I send a short written note on what we covered.

This suits anyone interested in the region's Christian heritage and its long continuity. It also suits a traveller combining this session with a walk through Mardin's Old City.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Mardin before heading out.

  2. Monastery Courtyard 21 min

The camera looks across the stone courtyard of the monastery, in continuous use since the 5th century. I explain how the site has survived through many changes of rule in the region.

  3. Chapel Exterior 21 min

You see the exterior of the monastery's main chapel from the courtyard. I point out architectural details shared with other Syriac churches in the region.

  4. Saffron Fields Nearby 21 min

From outside the walls, the camera looks toward fields once used to grow saffron, which gives the monastery part of its name. I explain the connection.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Mardin: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Sembusek (savoury pastry) and Cumhuriyet Mahallesi, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Istanbul time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 7 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
