Matera Cathedral above the Sassi
Highlights
- A Romanesque cathedral on the highest point
- Both Sassi districts seen at once
- A bell tower that marks the whole skyline
- The ravine and the Murgia behind the town
- An overview before going in closer
About this tour
This session climbs to Matera Cathedral on the hilltop known as Civita, the highest point over both Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano. You see the thirteenth-century Romanesque facade, the bell tower that marks the skyline from almost everywhere in town, and the full spread of the Sassi from beside the church. It ties the two cave districts together from above before looking closer at either one.
I climb first and keep the phone on the town while I explain how Civita sits between the two Sassi, then move closer to the cathedral facade. I answer questions throughout and send a short note afterwards with the cathedral's history.
This suits anyone who wants an overview before or after walking through the Sassi itself. It also works well early in the morning, when the town below is at its quietest.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
