Isola and the vertical forest
Highlights
- Trees growing several floors up
- Engineering behind a vertical forest
- An industrial district, made new
- Isola's older streets, still standing
- Modern Milan, one balcony at a time
About this tour
This session covers the Bosco Verticale towers in Isola and the older streets right behind them. You see the balconies planted with trees and hear how the engineering keeps them alive so high above the ground, then walk into the district's older streets, still recognisably industrial in places. It links one of Milan's newest landmarks to the neighbourhood it grew out of.
We start with a sound check facing the towers, since the road nearby can be busy. I move into the side streets for the second stop and take questions about the building's engineering or the district's history as we go. A short reading note follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone with an interest in modern architecture or sustainable building design. It also works well paired with a session in Milan's newer CityLife district.

The camera takes in the two towers with trees growing from every balcony, and I explain the engineering behind keeping thousands of plants alive several floors above the street.

We walk into the older streets behind the towers, and I point out how a former industrial district now sits directly beside some of Milan's newest architecture.

A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cotoletta alla milanese and Navigli, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
