The Ness Islands, a quiet river walk
Highlights
- Trees closing overhead within steps
- A footbridge over fast-moving water
- Bridges rebuilt after flood damage
- A quiet park in the river itself
- Inverness at its most peaceful
About this tour
This session walks through the Ness Islands, a set of small wooded islands linked by Victorian footbridges in the middle of the river. You see the trees closing overhead almost as soon as you cross onto the first island, and a footbridge with the water running fast beneath it. Moira explains how these structures have survived, and sometimes not survived, the river's floods.
After a short sound check at the entrance, the walk moves slowly between the islands, with time for questions throughout. Moira answers as you go and sends a short note afterwards on the best time of year to visit.
It suits anyone who wants a genuinely quiet session close to the city centre, and works well for birdwatchers. It also appeals to those who enjoy Victorian park engineering.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Inverness before heading out.
-
Entering the islands 15 min
The camera crosses onto the first of the wooded islands, tall trees closing overhead almost immediately. Moira points out how quickly the river's sound changes once you're among the trees.
-
A footbridge crossing 15 min
A small Victorian footbridge links two of the islands, the river running fast beneath it. Moira explains how these bridges have needed regular rebuilding after flood damage over the years.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Inverness: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cranachan and Merkinch, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
