The fortress wall and the old gate
Highlights
- Thracian foundations under later stone
- An old gate, still traceable
- Layers of building read at close range
- The wall and isthmus, working together
- A brief, focused look at the defences
About this tour
This session follows the town's surviving fortress wall, built up over Thracian foundations far older than the wall itself. You see the stonework's layers along the base and then the remains of the old entrance gate, with the wall and isthmus explained together as the town's defence. It stays along this one stretch of wall.
I move at a steady pace along the base, since the layers of stonework are easiest to read at close range. Questions about the different building periods come up often, and I keep the session brief and to the point.
This suits anyone wanting the old town's defences explained without a long detour into every church. It also works well as a quick add on to the peninsula walking session.

The camera follows the surviving stretch of ancient wall, and I explain how it was built up over much older Thracian foundations.

Old Town Gate 21 min
You see the remains of the old entrance gate, and I point out how the isthmus and the wall together controlled who could enter the peninsula.

-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Rakia (grape brandy) and Harbour Quarter, worth a slower look.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
