About this tour

This session looks at Chapelle de la Miséricorde, from its restrained stone exterior to the gilded interior visible from the doorway. You see the deliberate contrast between a plain outside and an overwhelming interior, a common trick of the baroque style in this region. It is a short session about a building most visitors walk straight past between the market and the sea.

We spend time at the exterior before moving to the doorway for the interior view, since the contrast between the two is the whole point. I answer questions about the style or the history as they come up. A short note on the altarpiece follows the call.

This suits anyone with an interest in art history or church architecture. It also works well as a short add-on to a Cours Saleya market session nearby.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Nice before heading out.

  2. The plain exterior 15 min

The camera looks at the chapel's restrained stone exterior, giving no hint of what sits behind the door. I explain why so many baroque churches in this region deliberately kept their outsides simple.

  3. The gilded interior, from the door 15 min

From the doorway, you see the interior's gold and colour, a complete contrast to the plain facade outside. I point out the specific altarpiece the chapel is best known for among historians of the style.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Nice: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Pan bagnat and Le Port, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Paris time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking".
