Christ Church Meadow, between two rivers
Highlights
- Open grazing land against a city centre
- Two rivers running close together
- A meadow protected for centuries
- A narrow strip between two waterways
- A quieter side of college Oxford
About this tour
This session walks Christ Church Meadow, the open grazing land between the city centre and the point where the Thames and the Cherwell nearly meet. It covers the meadow's long protection from building development and the narrow strip of land separating the two rivers. It is a quieter, greener session than the college-focused ones nearby.
We start at the meadow gate and follow the path towards the water, pausing at the river confluence for a longer look. Questions about the meadow's protected status and the wildlife along it come up steadily, and I answer with what I know from years of walking the same path. I close with a note on the best times of day for a quiet walk here.
It suits anyone who wants open green space and river views within walking distance of the colleges. It also suits early risers, since the meadow is at its calmest before the day's main crowds arrive.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Oxford before heading out.
-
Meadow gate 21 min
The camera opens at the gate onto the open meadow, and I explain how the grazing land has been kept largely unbuilt for centuries despite sitting right against the city centre.
-
Thames and Cherwell confluence 21 min
Further along, you see the two rivers running close together before joining, and I point out the narrow strip of land that separates them at this point.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Oxford: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Sunday roast and Jericho, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
