The Radcliffe Camera from Radcliffe Square
Highlights
- A Baroque dome from several angles
- An unusual circular reading room
- A square built around one building
- Decades of library insider knowledge
- The best light for the dome explained
About this tour
This session looks at the Radcliffe Camera as a piece of architecture, seen from Radcliffe Square rather than from inside, since the reading room itself is reserved for library members. It covers the building's unusual circular plan and how it was positioned to dominate the surrounding square. It draws on decades spent working in the library system around it.
We start with the dome from one side of the square, then move around for different angles as the light changes. Questions about the building's construction and its place in the wider library system come up naturally. I close with a note on the best time of day for photographing the dome.
It suits architecture enthusiasts and anyone curious about the building most photographs of Oxford actually show. It also works well as a short add-on to a longer Bodleian session.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Oxford before heading out.
-
Domed exterior 21 min
The camera circles part of the building's Baroque dome, and I explain how its circular plan was unusual for a reading room when it was completed in 1749.
-
Square-level view 21 min
From ground level between the surrounding colleges, you see how the Camera sits deliberately at the centre of the square, and I point out the buildings that frame it on each side.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Oxford: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fish and chips and Cowley Road, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
