Riga Central Market and Latvian food

- Cheese studded with caraway seeds
- Grey peas cooked with bacon, explained
- Riga Black Balsam and its old reputation

About this tour
This session is a longer visit to Riga Central Market, built around Latvian staples rather than a quick browse, from the hangar of smoked fish and rye bread to a cheese and grey pea stall and the counter selling Black Balsam. You see caraway-studded cheese and bacon-flecked grey peas explained dish by dish, and hear the older stories behind the dark liqueur. The walk covers three of the market's five hangars.
The call opens with a sound check, then the guide moves hangar to hangar, explaining each dish's place in Latvian cooking and pausing for your questions throughout. A short list of what was tasted or shown follows by message.
This suits anyone who wants a deeper look at Latvian food than a quick market stroll, or is cooking Latvian dishes at home.
Included
- Live video session with a local guide
- A close look at the dishes and where locals buy them
- A short list of places and dishes to try later

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
